Stepping onto this sprawling 200-acre site feels like journeying back in time to over 2000 years. Over a hundred natural caves dot the landscape, with approximately 25 open for exploration. Here, one can almost sense the profound peace experienced by forest dwelling Buddhist monks inhabiting these ancient monastic apartments since the 3rd century BC, a quiet world far removed from today's hustle. If you close your eyes and just be, you can still feel the gentle aura left behind by these devout monks during a land before time.
As one explores, hidden ponds shimmer, ancient murals adorn walls, and an impressive 18th-century palanquin stands as a testament to its past. A true highlight is the colossal 500-year-old Giant Pus creeper, a living monument so majestic, it feels like greeting a wise old soul of the forest. This unexpectedly tranquil rocky forest oasis, so close to the capital, makes Pilikuttuwa a magnificent hidden gem, patiently awaiting discovery.
