Tales from the Tewatte Basilica

This sacred site is a testament to a profound promise, the one made in 1940 by Archbishop Jean Marie Masson. He vowed to build a magnificent shrine to Our Lady of Lanka if the island was spared from the horrors of World War II. When his prayers were answered, his successor, Cardinal Thomas Cooray, fulfilled that vow, creating the incredible Basilica we see today. Explore, get enlightened and marvel. 

We'll start where it all began: the original humble chapel, built after a love story from 1887 brought the first Catholic family to the area. This small chapel is a surviving piece of history that marks the first Catholic unit in Tewatte. From there, we'll take a peaceful stroll through the Basilica's grounds, walking through serene rubber plantations and lush gardens.

Next, we'll visit the Calvary Cave, a tranquil spot for quiet reflection. The journey then takes us to the main event, the stunning new Basilica. Here, you'll get to admire its unique architecture, a beautiful blend of Sri Lankan, Indian, and Western styles, and understand the powerful symbolism behind every detail.
